Melasma

We're pleased to offer Melasma treatment at our St. John's, Newfoundland studio!

Do you have melasma that just won’t fade? You’re not alone.

Melasma is a common skin condition that often develops due to hormones, sun exposure, or genetics. It can appear gradually and become more noticeable over time.

For many people, it shows up as darker patches on the cheeks, forehead, or upper lip and doesn’t respond to regular skincare products.

Melasma can be persistent, but treatment options are available.

Laser treatment offers a controlled, gradual approach to reducing visible pigmentation while prioritizing skin safety.

Does your melasma keep coming back?

Melasma is more than just simple sun damage. It is hormonally influenced pigmentation that lives deeper in the skin. It fluctuates, reacts, and often returns after surface-level treatments.

Many patients have tried:
• IPL
• Chemical peels
• Topical lighteners

• Broad-spectrum laser treatments

Melasma is a heat-sensitive condition, which means treatments that rely heavily on thermal energy can sometimes make it worse rather than better. Many traditional lasers (and especially IPL treatments) work by generating significant heat in the skin. When too much heat is delivered, it can stimulate melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing pigment.

When this happens, pigmentation may return or even deepen instead of improving. We approach melasma differently.

Why PicoWay® Is Different

Candela PicoWay delivers energy in picoseconds: trillionths of a second. Rather than depending primarily on heat, it creates a powerful photoacoustic effect that fragments pigment while minimizing unnecessary thermal spread.

The precision of picosecond technology also allows for targeted treatment with less unnecessary heat delivered to surrounding tissue. From a clinical standpoint, the system offers multiple wavelengths to address a range of pigmentation. It performs well on different pigment colours, and has a lower risk of heat-induced rebound pigmentation when administered correctly.

The technology can also be safely used across a wide range of skin types, with settings adjusted to suit individual needs.
